How AI Background Removal Works
Old-school background removal used color-based selection — you’d click on the background color and the tool would try to select all pixels of that color. This worked poorly on images where the subject and background shared similar tones (common with hair, fur, and clothing).
Modern AI removal is fundamentally different. What the Output Looks Like
The output is always a PNG file with an alpha channel — transparency is represented per-pixel, from fully transparent (background) to fully opaque (subject). Edges are feathered to blend naturally when placed on a new background.
In Windows Explorer, File Explorer, or macOS Finder, the transparent areas show as white thumbnails. Open the file in an image editor, presentation software, or browser to see the actual transparency. Most modern software handles transparent PNG correctly.
When to Use Blur Background Instead
Not every situation requires complete background removal. The Blur Background tool (also in the Image tab) uses the same AI model but instead of making the background transparent, it applies a smooth blur effect — similar to portrait mode on a smartphone camera.
Blur background is better when you want to keep a sense of environment but draw focus to the subject. It’s widely used for professional headshots, video thumbnails, and product shots where a completely plain background would look too clinical.
When AI removal won’t work well: Glass, water, smoke, and transparent objects confuse the AI because they’re partially see-through. Very busy backgrounds with similar colors to the subject also cause issues. For these cases, Photoshop’s Select Subject + Refine Edge is still more reliable.
